MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys: One Group, Two Very Different Brands

MSC Group, the shipping company behind MSC Cruises, runs two cruise brands that sit at opposite ends of the market. MSC Cruises builds large, modern, European-style ships; Explora Journeys, launched in 2023, is the group’s luxury brand. Explora took delivery of its third ship, Explora III, in July 2026, and has more ships on order.

MSC is now a big presence in US cruising, with year-round sailings from Florida and seasonal programs from other US ports. Its private island in the Bahamas, Ocean Cay, appears on many of those itineraries.

MSC Cruises

MSC’s ships mix grand atriums, family water parks and a separate, keycard-only area called the MSC Yacht Club, which acts like a small luxury ship inside the big one. The guest mix is international, with announcements in several languages on European sailings.

Suits: families (MSC has long offered kids-sail-free promotions on many sailings), value seekers, travelers who enjoy a European atmosphere, and those who want suite-level privacy through the Yacht Club.

May not suit: travelers who want an all-American feel, or those who prefer smaller ships with fewer guests.

Explora Journeys

Explora’s ships are all-suite, with ocean-facing terraces, many dining venues and an inclusive approach to drinks and Wi-Fi. The brand plans its first Alaska season in 2027 aboard Explora III. Suits: couples who want contemporary luxury and design. May not suit: families with young children or travelers seeking a traditional, formal luxury style.

Trading Between the Two

Some travelers sample the group’s luxury side by booking the MSC Yacht Club first, then move to Explora once they know they like the quieter life. Others go the other way, taking an MSC family sailing during school holidays and saving Explora for a couples’ trip. Either way, the ports on many Caribbean itineraries are covered in depth on Caribbean Cruise Ports.

Because both brands change their deployments each season, ask us which ships will be sailing from your nearest port in the year you plan to travel.

Questions to Ask Before Booking MSC Group Ships

  • Which language mix is on board? North American sailings are mostly English-speaking; Mediterranean sailings mix several nationalities, with announcements in more than one language.
  • Which experience level? MSC sells several fare levels that bundle different extras; compare what each one includes before deciding.
  • Yacht Club or regular cabin? The Yacht Club adds a private restaurant, lounge and pool area plus butler service, which changes the whole feel of a big ship.
  • Is Explora’s inclusive style worth it to you? If you would use the included drinks, dining and Wi-Fi, the comparison with mainstream lines looks very different.

Our advisors can lay those options out side by side so the choice comes down to the experience you want, not the fine print.
